Did You Know Swimming Rhinos Used to Be Native to Umatilla?
I saw something today that blew my mind. Aquatic rhinos used to live in the Umatilla County area when the region was a swamp.
30 million years ago northeast Oregon was a marshy swamp inhabited by crazy creatures that don't exist anymore (including saber-tooth tigers). The East Oregonian had a story about the Pendleton fisherman who discovered the rhino bone almost 70 years ago along with several other fossils of crazy animals like weird deer on the banks of the McKay Reservoir. It was a big find for the University of Oregon paleontologists. They also found a prehistoric horse and a saber-tooth cat.
