Today is National Day of Silence. You may be wondering what that is or why it's even a day, allow me to enlighten you. This isn't just another LGBT pride holiday we made up for recognition. This is a day where we look back on all of the brothers, sisters, friends, and loved ones that we've lost to suicide because they thought there was no other way out of the bullying they suffered everyday.

Allow me to put this into perspective for you. I grew up with 4 sisters and 2 brothers. One of my sisters was gay and was open about it, as a 13-year-old I thought that everyone just accepted how she was and everything was okay. One day I go to use the bathroom and I hear her crying, so I opened the bathroom door and she was bleeding from her wrists and sobbing uncontrollably. I didn't know what was happening but I knew she needed help so I screamed for my parents. After many years of counseling my sister is better and graduates high school this year. But for many they don't have a happy ending.

Whether or not you participate or even care about this day, please take the time to talk to someone you think needs it. A word is enough to push someone off of the ledge, but it's also enough to pull them back.
