Why Schools Should Be Named After REGULAR People!
Richland's new middle school has its new name, but I loved a debate that arose during the selection. District policy says schools should be named after geographic characteristics or deceased people with achievements in education, arts and science, or because of historical significance in the region.
School board member Brett Amidan complained we name schools after people who have been awesome at what they did, without acknowledging the luck that made them successful instead of a competitor in their field.
Most children won't be lucky enough to achieve fame, Amidan said. He suggested recognizing local people who anyone could grow up to emulate. He used the example of C.J. Mitchell, a longtime school official and Richland community member.
