It's National Popcorn Day! Yes, it's one of those goofy days someone somewhere created so we have something to Tweet about, but since I love popcorn I decided to find out more about it. I did a little digging and found some random and interesting facts about the beloved snack.

You may or may not have known the following tidbits, but now you will have some useless popcorn facts in your brain. Could come in handy for small talk at a party where you don't know many people, or pub trivia. Have a great National popcorn day, and take the quiz at the end to voice your opinion about the best kind of popcorn (I'm partial to white cheddar corn.) And sorry, now you want popcorn.

1. Popcorn comes from a type of maize that produces small kernels with a hard outer shell. These kernels can (and probably will) crack your tooth if chewed uncooked.

2. The popcorn variety of maize was domesticated by Pre-Columbian indigenous peoples by 5000 B.C.E.

3. Evidence of popcorn’s first “pop” did not appear until the 1820s, when it was sold throughout the eastern United States by the names Pearl or Nonpareil. Its began to get popular throughout the South by the 1840s.

4. One of the earliest recipes for popping corn came from Daniel Browne during the 1840s: slightly buttered or rubbed with lard, then popped in a hot frying pan.

5. The first version of Cracker Jack was made by Louis Ruckheim in the 1890s. His recipe: popcorn, peanuts, and molasses. Nom nom nom!

6. Popcorn’s popularity blew up thanks to movie theaters. Theater owners weren't originally on board with popcorn sales. They thought it might create be too expensive since popping machines/ovens weren't cheap or easy to install.

7. During The Depression popcorn was one thing that actually saw in increase in sales! Theater owners began to view it as a small luxury that patrons could afford.

8. In 1945, Percy Spencer discovered that when popcorn was placed under microwave energy, it popped. This led to experiments with other foods, and the birth of the microwave oven. -popcorn.org

9. Americans consume some 16 billion popcorn annually.

10. The world’s largest popcorn ball was created in Sac City, Iowa in February 2009. It weighed 5,000 lbs., was 8 ft. tall, and 28.8 ft. around in circumference.
