There are actually a few different ways to make banana cream pie, and some call for pudding. This is a from scratch recipe for the filling.

In this case and my grandma's ( I think) she made it from scratch. This came from a recipe on geniuskitchen.com and the recipe is by Lenne

The ingredients you need :

  • pie crust ( frozen or make your own)
  • 3 cups milk
  • 3/4 cup white sugar
  • 1/3 flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3 egg yolks beaten slightly
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 3 bananas

Not many ingredients which is nice.

You need to scald the milk in a saucepan (which is heating it up almost to boiling but not quite). In separate saucepan combine the sugar , flour and salt. then slowly stir in milk. Thicken over medium heat stirring constantly. Then you can cover it and leave it just a little then stir some more and occasionally stir here.

In a small bowl have 3 egg yolks slightly beaten, you're going to stir in some of the hot mix and mix it well with the egg yolks. Then pour that into main mixture and stir until it is all combined. Cook for one minute and stir it throughout.

Remove from heat and blend in the butter and vanilla. Let sit and then after you have covered your pie shell with a bottom of bananas you can pour the cream part over the top and then refrigerate before serving.
