Police dogs are incredible tools that can sniff for drugs and chase suspects through fields. In small, rural towns like Sunnyside having a K-9 unit is a real boon.

When Helios arrived in 2010 and Officer Skip Lemmon trained him the Sunnyside Police Department and community accepted him as Officer Helios -- one of their own. Now they are mourning a fallen officer.

On Friday night Helios' handler put him to bed for the night in his kennel and when the officer awoke in the morning Helios was gone. After a search the dog's body was found dead.

An autopsy and investigation is ongoing. The officer locked Helios inside his kennel, which means someone kidnapped the dog. Cause of death is still unknown.
